Re: low HDLFrom: sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 13 Feb 2003 07:36:52 -0600 (CST)
Hi, my HDL is also really low. Well, it was about 20 before when I was first diagnosed (about 18 months ago), and as of last test it was up to about 35 (about 9 months ago), and all other parameters are down with my total cholesterol being BELOW the normal range. I am about to have it retested in a month or so. Measures to increase HDL include;- 1. Moderate intake of healthy oils (so avoid the saturated fats, but make sure you eat sufficient healthy fats such as fish oil, olive oil, etc.). DO not avoid healthy fats in your diet - my research on the internet indicated that not having enough fat in your diet can actually make HDL levels worse. 2. Moderate alchol (particularly red wine) intake. Probably should not be more than 1 standard drink a day. Of course, if you can't stay moderate or can't drink alcholol for some reason, better avoid this one. 3. Regular vigorous aerobic exercise. Emphasis is on vigorous. This also helps our insulin resistance. 4. Do not smoke. 5. Keep away from refined carbohydrates and processed foods. Hope this helps
