What to eat - PCOS, GERD and must lose more weight. From: sally (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 9 Feb 2003 19:58:05 -0600 (CST)
Hi Guys, wanting some ideas if anyone can help. Have just been diagnosed as having barrett's oesophagus (complication of long term gastric reflux syndrome - and cancer precursor). Being only 32 I reckon this is my wakeup call or I will get cancer. I have a great aunt who died of oesophageal cancer - and it was not a nice way to die! My gastro doctor said that in addition to meds, I must follow very strict diet:- no spicy food/raw rood, milk/dairy products, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, softdrinks, beans/nuts, citrus fruits or other acidic fruits, tea, fatty foods. This is complicated further because with hypothyroid also should not eat much tofu. Also have to closely monitor calcium intake due to hypocalcaemia. He also said I must lose more weight and get down to my 'ideal' weight - as quickly as I safely can. However, having PCOS and Hypothyroid I absolutely cannot lose weight except with low carbohydrate (no refined carbs or sugars), very low calorie diet and exercise. I also find that refined foods make the GERD worse, as do eating larger amounts of complex carbs. I am so stuck on what to eat. It is so depressing that I just feel like not eating at all (aside from the pain with eating.....), though of course I can't do that..... It seems now that all I could eat would be cooked veges and proteins. How on earth can I get a balanced diet that will not bore me to absolute tears - and I still want to live and be able to eat in public! Sorry this is long, but any advice will be greatly appreciated.
