Re: NURSING WITH PCOS, IS IT SAFE?From: jalan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 28 Dec 2002 12:06:31 -0600 (CST)
Nicole: Nursing with PCOS is totally safe. I nursed my daughter for almost 3 years with no problems. At one point, I asked my doctor if it would be okay to do a low carb diet b/c I was afraid ketones would get into the milk, but the doctor was not concerned about it. If anything, I'd say the benefit you and your baby will get from nursing would far outweigh any negatives. And with PCOS, we definitely need the benefit of lower female cancer risk that we get from nursing to offset our other cancer risks. I know the weight is depressing. At the moment, I weigh almost as much as when I delivered my daughter 7 years ago. But from what I've read about the gastric bypass, the problems from that can be permanent and can make your life a living hell. I wouldn't do it without trying glucophage, low-carb diet, and exercise first. I doubt if you can take glucophage while nursing, so you might have to wait awhile on that. Good luck.
