question Re: Flaxseed

I am not on metformin, I'm just on a moderate-low carb diet. The docs won't put me on met because I am normal every time they check me. Except of course that I don't lose weight, I don't ovulate and have incredibly high cholesterol for a person with my lifestyle.

Do you, or anyone else for that matter, know if there are additive benefits to taking Flaxseed and other alpha lipoic supplements if you are already on a cholestatin? I'm on Lipitor, 40 mg/day. I am TOTALLY under control, but I would like to lower my Mg (under physician supervision, of course) and I am wondering if taking alpha lipoic/flaxseed oil would do the trick. It's cheap, and I have some already. I actually give it to my dog as a supplement for his dry curly coat. He loves it.

I read that in Europe, diabetes is treated with alpha lipoic, vitamin E, and magnesium. Sounds about right. I used to take 1000 mg slo-niacin for cholesterol control (one of the only things I can SWEAR is an aphrhodisiac, since it causes swelling and flushing in 'tender' bits, warning, it's a bit uncomfortable at times, but you can alleviate it with a baby aspirin. Anyway, it was fun.) and I've taken vitamin E. I was trying to take niacin with Zocor, but I guess that was not a good idea. Zocor and mevacor make me super lightheaded. But nothing worked as well as cholestatins, and none work as well as Lipitor.

Here's the kicker, though: you can't take it if you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant, and I've decided I want to try during the next 2 years. I am 31 and have never had a baby, and I've always dreamed of it. I figure I had better hurry it up.

So basically, I want to lose as much weight as I possibly can, get my cholesterol as low as possible, supplement my diet with HDL supporting foods and vitamins, and try for a healthy baby. Added bonus to prentals preconception: I hear that folic acid helps control cholesterol. wonder if it's true...
