I don't who wrote the first note, but they haven't researched the diet...as far as scandals who knows..and who cares. I've personally have only heard good reports about Dr. B. Diet Plan. I lost 20 lb on the diet and was not instructed to have only three meals a day. On the contrary I was counselled to eat frequently but keeping within the daily guidelines...I could have up to 16 oz. of vegetables per day (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, asparagus, onions..etc)..(I was stuffed) and two fruits..I usually chose a citrus and then also an apple or other 'allowable' fruit. He has a wonderful recipe book!. The diet cuts out most fats, starches and simple carbs, which your body begins to burn in the fat from it's own stores (those saddle bags). Your body can burn up to 3000 cal per day when it has to use it's reserves and this accounts for the rapid weight loss. You are only allowed 1 slice of hollywood bread per day or 2 slices of melba toast plus a list of other allowed grain products.(I chose Matzo) NO SUGAR...other than the sugar you get from your fruit. While on the diet I was instructed to take a multiple vitamin and was given vitamin B6 and B12 injections...due to the reduced grain intake. Personally, I felt terrific on the diet and my cholesterol levels are now where they are supposed to be. They were up to 6 points when I started the diet. I was 138 lb (5' 1") and wearing a size 14 to 16...I felt badly about the shape I was becoming. Now I am 118 to 121 lb. and wearing a size 10 and I am once again happy with myself and feeling very healthy. I am on 'maintenance' so I am gradually reintroducing foods to my diet to see which ones trigger weight gain...I have found out that I am sensitive to wheat products. I have learned to watch what I consume and to be careful of saturated and high fat foods and also sugars and starch. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the Bernstein Diet to acheive a weight goal and to re-learn a healthy eating pattern to maintain a healthy weight. But you must follow it precisely while achieving your desired weight. He advocates exercise as well as dieting to achieve your goals. This is combined with medical supervision, counselling by registered nurses and proper supplements (including potassium) to make up for any nutrient losses associated with the diet itself. The only problem I would ever see, is if someone is picky about their choice of fruits and veggies...I like all fruits and veggies and I also enjoy cooking and being creative with food choices. I am a very happy individual and I have a sensible cholesterol level now...and new eating habits. I even eat Reeses peanut butter cups once in a while! and I haven't regained any of the weight I lost. We'll see how I do over christmas!! Thank you Dr. Bernstein!
