Actually, grapes and oranges have a very high glycemic index and are very dense in sugars. Apples are much better, as they are less sweet and have less sugar overall. Berries and melons are much better.

I can only speak for myself regarding taking glucophage and low-carbing, but I'll share my experience. I am very intolerant of carbs, personally. I started low-carbing and taking glucophage 500 mg once a day around the same time (the low-carbing about 3-4 months earlier). I saw an immediate response from each. And, I do extremely low-carb. Kind of permanent Atkins induction. I kept my carbs as low as possible. Over time I increased my gluc to 500 twice a day, and now take it 850 twice a day. I've only started adding a little fruit (a few strawberries or raspberries, a couple chunks of melon, etc.) recently, to add some natural vitamins, but it's still very limited, and I schedule it so that I've had sufficient protein/fat to balance it and slow the absorption, and and watch what other carbs I'm eating. For example, I won't eat a strawberry with breakfast if my breakfast was a quesadilla with a low-carb tortilla (3 gm carbs).

If I eat carbs, even with the dose gluc I'm on, I feel it immediately, very negatively. If I eat something with carbs in it, I'll figure it out right away. Within 10 minutes, even 5 minutes. Since I've upped my dose I'm more tolerant of surprise carbs, and the fruit. However, I know when I've hit my limit.

For me, it's not redundant. It's two pieces of the solution, and both are crucial for me. Others may not be as sensitive as me, but I need both. Every woman needs to experiment with themselves. Monitor what you feel like with carbs, and watch for that feeling as you experiment with different carb levels. Do the same if you're taking met. I do agree about chosing the carbs carefully when eating them. But, the volume of carbs, and where on the glycemic index they fall, definitely varies by person, and must be discovered individually.
