Re: polycistic ovariesFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 28 Aug 2002 18:33:52 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Julie, The previous poster is incorrect. A hysterectomy will not help your condition. However, it is important that you get periods at least 4 times a year. This should be induced with provera or by taking bcp. However BCP alone is not satisfactory as treatment for PCOS. The most likely drug to help you is Metformin / glucophage. You need to ask your doctor about this drug and insist that he let you try it. Metformin can take some time to work and you may need to work up to a therapeutic dose (anywhere between 500 mg and 2500 mg/day). This would most liekly be a long-term medication. Look up PCOS and Metformin on the net and you will find heaps of information. For the weight, most likely you would find a lower carb diet helpful. For this you need to cut out all refined carbohydrates and get most of your carbs from vegetables (except white potatoes - which are very starchy) and some whole grain products. Avoid sugary, starchy, and highly refined carbs (white rice, white bread, soft drink, pasta, fruit juice, cakes, biscuits, cookies, etc). You may find that once you avoid these carbs you no longer feel the need to eat them. Have you been tested for thyroid condition? THis can also affect weight in smoe cases of women with PCOS. If you current doctor won't consider metformin, you need to find an endocrinologist who specialises in PCOS to work with you. Hope this helps, Best wishes Sally
