Re: Losing 100 lbs. with PCOSFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 15 Jul 2002 09:40:56 -0500 (CDT)
There is nothing wrong with NOT taking Glucophage. The thing to realize is that high insulin levels and insulin resistance will progress unless the cells are made more sensitive to insulin. That is what Glucophage and the other medications do. Apparently a careful (lower carb) diet and exercise can also improve insulin/cell sensitivity, and thus improve overall health. AT issue is something needs to be done, and IR should not be ignored. If you've figured it out, this is a good thing, as you can help delay the progression of IR towards TT 2 Diabetes and Syndrome X. Research towards prevention hasn't totally happened, but research about the progrression seems to be pretty clear. I would not take a medication if you didn't like it, didn't like its side effects, or didn't want to take it. But, I am striving to do the other things that I know will improve my health. If they gave you a choice, that is great. I think when you aren't given the choice, and either told you must take a drug, or told you can't take the drug when you want to, therin lies the rub.
