Re: Syndrome 'X'

Metabolic Syndrome X is one of the many conditions being researhed now. IR seems to be the common thread between Syndrome X, PCOS and GEstational Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. In my view, it is IR that is the common thread, with other conditions developing. For example, a man wouldn't develop PCOS, but might develop Syndrome X. And a woman might not develop PCOS, but might develop Syndrome X. Gestational diabetes is actually IR in its early stages, and now they are linking IR/GDM and Hypertension. The root cause is still IR. One can have mild IR and not have anything else. That is why we need to work with IR, as if left untreated, it becomes a more and more seriuous condition. I did my MS researh on IR and that is when the whole picture became clearer for me. Exercise helps because it improves our cells ability to receive the insulin and therefore function properly. Careful carb choices help, becuase it minimized the level of sugar in the body, and thus doesn't stimulate more and more insulin release. Lots of sugar and starchy carbs stimulated more and more insulin, and the body becomes more and more resistant, and then boom, here comes diabetes. Education about this topic is so very important. This is my take on it all. I probably have read every book and topic on this. My goal is: I don't want to develop diabetes, so I am doing everything in my power to avoid it. I know of many folks now with full blown Type 2 Diabetes who 'could have' at least slowed the onset of diabetes by making changes in their diet over the past few years. But, didn't and now are paying the price. Prevention is the key. So, I applaud all that you all are doing.
