Diana,

you don't need to sign up with anyone to follow a low carb diet, you can do it yourself.

As LNance said, the basics are very simple:-

you may eat any type of meats (though you should keep to lean meats, to assist in the weight loss), cheese ok, some regular or low fat diary ok (but not too much as these do contain carbs), all veges except white potatoes, corn and carrots, cut out everything white and sugary or starchy (fruit juice, soft drink, candies, white bread, pasta, rice, noodles, cakes, biscuits)and also highly processed foods which are usually high in fat, sugar, preservatives, etc, limit fruit intake but a couple of pieces a day probably ok, nuts ok, fish ok, avocado good. Eat high fibre foods as much as possible, and do watch how many calories you eat (try not to go less than 1200 and not too much more than 2000 - you should experiment with the top number).

There are some good books including The Zone, Sugar Busters which are pretty balanced right down to Atkins which is very strict and does tend to be a little controversial. It is a matter of experimenting and seeing what works for you and what you can live with for life.

And the occassional splurge (at a birthday or something) probably won't be a big problem if you can stick with it for 90 - 95% of the time.

My trick is when I really want something sugary or with carbohydrates I have one ginger snap cookie. I have also fine a 80% cocoa chocolate - which is quite satisfying. And usually I don't get carb cravings now...... though if I start eating white bread for any reason and there is a loaf in front of me I have a very hard time stopping.

Best wishes

You do need some self discipline, but it gets easier if you see results.
