Re: some information on Chromium and insulinFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 17 Apr 2002 15:39:32 -0500 (CDT)
The birth control pill does not cause insulin resisitance. Insulin resisitance is a phenomenon, and it isn't clear what 'causes' it. Basically, your cells resist the intended action of insulin. The birth control pill suppresses the hormones that cause ovulation, and also changes the cervical mucous. In women with PCOS, the pill just puts everything to sleep, and creates an artificail period. When women with PCOS go off the pill, the symptoms return, and sometimes worsen, as PCOS seems a progressive condition, getting worse through the years, without treatment. So, the goal of therapy is to find a provider who will work with you and your specific needs and requirements. Pat, ARNP
