Victoria,

I'm glad you're not giving up fruits and veggies, but you do need to be careful about which fruits and veggies you eat.

I recall that bananas and grapes are high glycemic and should be avoided, at the least moderated. There are lists on the internet of high glycemic fruits and veggies.

Fruits and veggies contain high fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins. The antioxidants in them cannot be bottled - many have not yet been discovere/isolated. The incidence of diabetes in true vegetarians is very low.

I tried doing a "balanced diet" that was low glycemic, eating lean meats, a tiny amount of rice - unless it was brown, and veggies and fruit, but, for me it didn't work, my glucose continued to go up despite being on glucophage. I guess I'm beyond the point where I can eat that way, otherwise I would eat as you are.

The high fiber approach is working for me. I am feeling great on a mostly veggie diet. I do eat chicken when I go out, but I'm not eating red meat - don't seem to want it anymore.

Cutting out caffine is a really good thing to do too. The other thing to do is limit diet drinks to those that contain splenda (diet rite has splenda and no sodium), otherwise you might as well be drinking the sugary ones - our bodies respond just the same to neutrasweet as to sugar.

You can have bread, pasta and rice if you have them as unrefined as possible.

Best bread - stone ground sprouted wheat Best rice - brown basmatic rice (takes 45 minutes to cook, make it on the weekend, refrigerate it and nuke it when you want it). Pasta - wheat pasta (but only on occassion - for me at least).

Good luck with the diet changes, they aren't fun, but life is, so eat to live.

The difference is I'm not giving up fruits and veggies. I'm munching on apples, grapes and bananas, to give my body healthier carbs. I'm also working on cutting out as much caffeine as possible and drinking more water. I don't know if it will work or not, but I think maybe the natural types of carbs might be something worth trying. My body needs some carbs for all the exercise and extra curricular activities I do.
