Hi!

Most women with PCOS who are overweight have some form of insulin resistance. I am considered to be borderline IR by my lab results. Many traditional diets out there have been low-fat, low-calorie and also very high in carbohydrates and sugars (natural and otherwise). I was looking at my sister's can of Slimfast the other day and yikes -- lots of carbs and sugars! I have tried traditional diets for years and they haven't helped one bit. I actually gain on them. I then researched my PCOS more and found out that low carbing helps our insulin levels which in turn helps our PCOS which in turn should help our weight. Your Glucophage is a great start.

I have found low carb dieting to be easy to follow and I am no rocket scientist. I would get a few books -- Atkins New Diet Revolution (this is the "purist's" low carb diet and the one I follow), Sugar Busters, The Zone, the Suzanne Somers diet which I think is called Somersizing. All of these plans differ in certain ways but they are all lower carb diets. Go to Amazon.com and look in their diet section and you'll find books on all of these plans. Some are more strict than others and some you'll probably lose faster on than others. Some ladies with PCOS can eat "a lot" of carbs 50 or more and lose and some need to drop way down to say 20 to lose. You'll have to experiment to see how many you can eat per day in order to lose.

About carb cravings. I think that the first two weeks are the most difficult. You body almost goes through a carb withdrawal. You may even experience some fatigue. If you do, add an extra green salad that day. This will pass -- but you need to give it time. Get rid of all of the cookies, mac n cheese, etc.

I love the website http://www.atkinsfriends.com -- I visit there everyday! Many people there are doing Atkins or some other low carb diet (like the ones I mentioned above). There is a board like this one, a great recipe board, info, support, success stories and pics, a carb counter that lists almost every food known to man and you can even purchase low carb items there. If you are low carbing I consider it a must. It is my daily support and keeps me going and motivated. Oh, and they even have a live chat (if you're into that) where you can get suggestions and info right away. Anyway, I'm sure this is more than you ever wanted to know! LOL! God bless! Tera
