Re: Low-Carbing: FruitsFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 25 Feb 2002 12:10:26 -0600 (CST)
Fruits in general are carbohydrates. Some fruits have a higher glycemic index than others, and should be avoided. Other fruits have a lower glycemic index, and thus do not affect your blood sugar quite so dramatically. Folks who are strict low carbers probably don't eat much fruit, but remember, the fruit itself provides lots of fiber and great phytonutrients, so are an important item to include in your diet. Barry Sears, in his book The Zone, suggests the following fruits are more unfavorable carbs, and suggests they should be avoided. They are probably more concentrated sources of sugar than the other fruits are Bananas, Cranberries, Cranberry Sauce, Dates, Figs, Guava, Kumquat, Mango, Papaya, Prunes and Raisins. Of course most (all ?) fruit juices aren't recommended, as they are highly concentrated and do not provide the fiber that the actual fruit does. The fiber is very important, as it helps with the metabolism of the sugar. Always choose the fiber, as it is very beneficial.
