The Adrenal gland is a gland within the endocrine system, a part of the "The adrenal glands are part of a complex system that produces interacting hormones. The hypothalamus produces corticotropin-releasing hormone, triggering the pituitary gland to secrete corticotropin, which regulates the production of corticosteroids by the adrenal glands. Adrenal glands may stop functioning when either the pituitary or hypothalamus fails to produce sufficient amounts of the appropriate hormones. Underproduction or overproduction of any adrenal hormones can lead to serious illness."[http://www.merck.com/pubs/mmanual_home/sec13/146.htm]
