Re: So you want to lose weight!

Thank you for telling us what we already know. I get the distinct impression you feel that we are a bunch of women looking for an easy out or an excuse to be obese.

Speaking for myself, that is definitely not the case. I'm a RN and have also worked as a Jenny Craig consultant. You sound like me a decade ago. I used to think women who blamed hormones for their weight gain were either lying, or fooling themselves. Either way, I had the same contempt for them as you do now. You see, I KNEW if my energy expenditure was more than my energy intake, then I WOULD lose weight, and had myself. I lost 30 kg (66lbs) when I was 20 and kept it off for 10 years. Then suddenly, at the age of thirty, NOTHING I did seemed to help. Working as a RN I walked about 15 km a day on the wards (don't ask me what that is in miles, but it is a lot and nursing certainly isn't sedentary). I also watched my weight, but no matter what I did I packed it on. If I went on a 1000 cal diet, unlike 10 years earlier, instead of losing 2 kg (4.4lbs) the first week, I'd be lucky if I lost .5kg (1lb).

I'm sure you think you are being helpful by telling us something we don't already know, but I can assure you, we've all heard it before. We aren't looking for excuses or an easy way out. All *I* want is to be NORMAL!

Do you know much about diabetes? Are you aware that untreated diabetics do not produce insulin, or not enough insulin? What happens if their diabetes gets out of control? They LOSE weight (as well as destroying their entire body). They lose weight by the bucketful! Excess insulin (as in PCOS) converts everything you eat into fat. Insulin resistence CAUSES obesity and that in turn compounds the problem and it is more difficult to lose weight.

<<walking is free to all. There is no charge for pounding the pavements.>>

It isn't very pleasant in the 40 degree celcius (100 F) we are experiencing in Australia, nor I imagine in the snow that my northern sisters are experiencing. Including exercise IS important, but ISN'T always easy, free, or in the case of women with young families, logistically possible. Mind you, a recent survery conducted here, showed that housewives were far more physically active than most workers outside the home.

>Personally,I think that these diseases do exhist, but you cannot cast blame on being overweight because of it.That is something that most of you do.>

<sigh> Haven't you got something better to do?

>I am assuming that I have offeneded someone out there. My intentions were not to do that.>

Of course you are. You're telling us we're all sitting around eating bon bons, looking for excuses. We don't need advice like that. We just want the same level playing field as everyone else, we don't want an easy out, we just want what YOU take for granted.

>This is hard ball ladies and time to FIGHT BACK!
>Get in control of your bodies, and stop chewing on BON BON's as you type at the computer,I can see you all,:-)>>

I'm a firm believer in what goes around, comes around, it certainly happened to me. I used to think like you. I wouldn't wish PCOS on anyone, but it is certainly tempting to wish it on you ;-)
