You might want to try a moderate carb diet like the Zone -- but since you're breastfeeding, I wouldn't restrict calories the way the Zone recommends. The Zone is 40% of calories from carbohydrate (grains, fruits, veggies), 30% from protein and 30% from fat. A good book on this is The Soy Zone by Barry Sears (it recommends eating a lot of soy, but you definitely don't have to be a vegetarian to do the Zone). This book includes a comparison of the Zone diet with the food pyramid -- basically the Zone has more protein, more veggies and fruits, and much less grain. For a start, try this: imagine your plate divided into thirds. Fill 1/3 of the plate with low fat protein. Fill the other 2/3 with veggies. Add some fat -- preferably monounsaturated fat like olive oil or nuts. If you want dessert, have one of the lower glycemic fruits like berries, an apple, or a citrus fruit. Eat whenever you're hungry, but make sure every meal and snack includes protein, carbohydrate, and fat. If you want to eat whole grains, fill 1/3 of the plate with protein, 1/3 with grains and leave the other third empty. Another thing to try that is compatible with breast feeding is to eat foods that are low on the glycemic index. A good book on this is "The Glucose Revolution." It is not a low carb diet, but the carbs are carbs that don't cause a spike in blood sugar -- certain whole grains, beans, veggies, and certain fruits. When your daughter is weaned, you might want to look at one of the lower carb diets. "Protein Power" by the Eades is a good book. HTH.
