Dear Lisa,

from what you say metformin would probably be a very very good idea - and maybe the sooner the better. While it is not a panacea, it can prevent the onset of full-blown diabetes and help most of the other PCOS symptoms. You can search info on this site and the pcos support site and take it to your Dr. if necessary to convince her. Metformin can have some gastric side effects at first but these normally wear off after a while. The key is to start with a very low dose and work up slowly.

Using a low refined carb diet is also probably a very good idea. As that is the diet that is most suited from many women with PCOS.
