Where do I start?From: Lisa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 21 Jan 2002 18:23:42 -0600 (CST)
I was diagnosed with PCOS at aged 23 and had fertility treatment to have my three children. I am now 37 and my youngest baby is 7 months old. I have put on a LOT of weight in the past 5 years, with little change in diet. I'm exploring the idea of a low carb diet and several indicators lead me to think it might be an option for me. Firstly, I was diagnosed as insulin resistant before conception and my GTT during pregnancy showed an abnormally high insulin response and an abnormally LOW glucose response. Also, when I was pregnant, in spite of eating twice as much as I ever have in my entire life, I didn't gain ANY weight and my urine always showed moderate ketones in spite of my very high carb diet at the time. My baby was 9 lb and two weeks early. I also have a very strong family history of mature onset diabetes. I haven't done much reading on a low carb diet, but from what I have read, it would be a radical change for me. My diet has always been based on the healthy food pyramid. Lots of fruit/vegetables/grains, moderate protein/dairy and low fat. I'm not on glucophage, would it help? Where do I go for more information on a low carb/high protien diet? What do you guys recommend? I am also breastfeeding my 7 month old and she isn't taking to solids very well yet. Thanks in advance for any direction you can give me.
