Re: PCOS birth control ineffectiveFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 20 Jan 2002 01:36:25 -0600 (CST)
Stefanie what you experienced seems to be the norm with PCOS - bcp's tend to make all of our symptoms worse. Our hormones are already all over the place, changing them more with bcp just really makes it bad! The somewhat standard line of treatment for PCOS is medication that helps your body use it's insulin better, insulin sensitizers. The most common one of these is Glucophage (Metformin.) This is a pretty new development, used regularly probably only the last 2 - 3 years or so. It not only can reduce your symptoms, but will help protect you from future disease (like diabetes), can restore your fertility, and just help you to be healthier in general. Without a doctor's help, you can definitely try diet and excercise. When I say diet, I don't mean just eat less - you may even need to eat more. The goal is to keep your blood sugar and insulin levels very nice and stable. Try not to miss meals. Eat a moderate amount of fat (good for cell walls) especially healthy fats like olive oil or avocados. Keep carbs to a minimum and make them complex carbs, and always balance them wth protein. Cut sugar down or out completely, also artificial sweeteners except Splenda. You might see some really good results after a few weeks just with a change in diet. There's more info at http://www.pcosupport.org. Good Luck!
