Re: KetosisFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 3 Jan 2002 09:08:18 -0600 (CST)
I was responding to the original comments made by this individual: <Two years ago,I was told by an endo that I was in ketosis, but not by choice. She had a test for me to do where the paper turned different colors when dispensed in my urine. At that time,I was very thin and loosing weight, but not by choice.I was thought of to be anorexic. Then she did tests to determine the thyroid activity that proved to be over active to a degree, but no meds were prescribed for the thyroid condition, but a beta blocker called propanol for the rapid heartbeat,of which she said was a contributing factor in me loosing a tremendous amount of weight, despite that I was not dieting.> She was asking about Ketosis, and suggested she was underweight and having heart palpitations. I also suggested several other things that could be contributing to these symptoms, such as a heart arrythmia, panic attack, etc. It is clear each of us are different, and what applies to one person might or might not apply to someoen else. Usually someone with an overactive thyroid [hyperthyroid] will have sudden and dramatic weight loss, and sometimes hair loss. An overactive thyroid would suggest a high metabolism. The thyroid, among other things deal with metabolism. Read the section on hyperthyroid: http://thyroid.org/resources/patients/brochures/hyperthyroidism.html An underactive thyroid might suggest someone wouldn't lose weight, and would have other problems. Read the section on hypothyroid: http://thyroid.org/resources/patients/brochures/hypothyroidism.html A woman's thyroid can get out of balance quite easily. You probably need a complete lab work up: thyroid, Fasting Blood Sugar and Total Colesterol for starters. Having a provider who really understands hormonal conditions, and IR specifically helps you to piece things together.
