Re: Carbohydrate Allowance whilst taking MetfominFrom: Theresa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 30 Nov 2001 19:54:28 -0600 (CST)
I was diagnosed in August and started Metformin 1500 mg/day in October. Since then I've visited a registered dietician and she has suggested the eating plans prescribed for diabetics. It's lower in carbs than most "normal" people eat, but not super low-carb. For me (I want to lose about 50 pounds), I have 15 exchanges of carbs a day. 1 exchange is 15g (1 slice of bread, 1 small apple). You also space it out during the day (eating 2-3 snacks), and count legumes, fruit, milk, and yogurt as carbs. You are supposed to get as many unprocessed servings of carbs you can, and eat lean protein and lots of veggies. It's very easy to get the hang of, and no foods are excluded. Some of it is the metformin, but the reduction in my appetite and cravings is amazing. I actually find myself eating a bit less carbs than on my plan. I've lost 10 pounds, and had a period one month after starting this treatment.
You can find the basic info at the American Diabetes Association web
site.
