Re: vegetarian and low-carbing?

You're probably not going to want to hear this, since I certain;y didn't want to hear it when I first started coming to these discussion boards... but being veg. and eating low carb is very difficult. I am not saying it is impossible... but it is difficult.

I was vegetarian for over ten years and I fought pretty hard against the idea of being a meat eater. I was vegetarian for both health and ethical reasons. I thought being veg. would make me thin & healthy. And I love chickens in particular and didn't wish to eat them. The more I read, the more it became apparent to me that being vegetarian was anything but healthy for me. In the two months or so after starting to eat meat again, I lost 25 pounds. I did not low-carb at any point; I just found that by eating meat again it was easier to switch my diet to more protein and lower carbs. You can do this as a veg., to be sure... but I was getting kind of tired of tofu and I find veg. meat substitutes to be really gross (not to mention expensive). If you don't mind the meat substitutes, maybe you'll have an easier time of it.

I know that many people eat a vegetarian diet and are quite healthy, but I believe we are all different and not all diets work for the same person. I once would have said it was cruel to eat meat, but I had to change my thinking to see that it was cruel to feed myself a vegetarian diet. Maybe some of us are biologically meant to be omnivores. I still eat a lot of vegetarian foods... but I have more variety now that I allow myself to eat chicken and fish now and then.

If you absolutely will not give up being vegetarian - and I really do urge you to consider it, though I know it is hard to do - have you tried something along the lines of sugar busters? even if your diet is still heavily carbohydrate, changing those carbs to lower gylcemic index carbs might be useful.
