Re: Just got diagnosedFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 19 Oct 2001 15:27:11 -0500 (CDT)
Maria - congrats on gettign diagnosed - that really is half the battle! There's so much information out there about PCOS, it would be good to do some reading. Doctors don't always know everything about this syndrome, and we have to manage a lot of our own health care, unfortunately. Start with the PCOS Association at http://www.pcosupport.org or just type PCOS into a search engine. You'll definitely want to ask about Glucophage if you can. BCP's are good at controlling the worst of the symptoms but they don't treat any of the hormonal imbalance or insulin problems that cause the symptoms. To be healthier, we need to get that in check! Low carbing is great for PCOS, but it will throw off your bloodwork if you get some done. If your doctor is going to do an insulin glucose tolerance test, for example, before putting you on Glucophage, it would probably be better to hold of on starting the low carb diet until after that test. Hope this helps! Feel free to email me if I can help further.
