Re: Just got diagnosedFrom: Joanna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 16 Oct 2001 21:45:55 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Maria, It's difficult to say whether or not you should go on glucophage. You might as well ask your doctor. I have a feeling she'll shun the idea. I personally haven't found a doctor in favour of it. If unwanted hair growth is a problem for you, however, there is spironolactone (an anti-androgen). With long term use, you may notice a reduction in unwanted hair growth. It may take up to a year for you to see any difference. As for the birth control pill, I have read that monophasic (i.e., Diane 35)pills are better than triphasic (i.e., Tricyclen). Personally, I have used both. I now use Diane. Apparently, Diane contains a drug that may allow you to stop taking the spironolactone. In Canada, Diane is approved for acne treatment, so if acne is a problem for you (as a result of the pcos), this will help with that. As far as medications, those three are it really...that I have heard of. You may want to browse http://www.pcosupport.org/medical/ for more information. Additionally, I have reduced my carbohydrate intake, since after the reading I have done, I feel it's a good decision for me. You might want to look into it. Good luck! I hope this helps! Well, I'm off to bed!
