I agree. I have a patient in my wound clinic who found a lump 2 years ago, and didn't do anything about it until the tumor came through her skin. She has two small children, and she is going to die. Until that time, her quality of life is poor. The tumor has eaten her breast, and she has an open, infected, dead tissue-filled hole in her chest down to the ribs.

I'll tell you: the first time I saw her, I went home and did a BSE on myself.

Many lumps are nothing. Just cysts or calcium deposits, or just a piece of denser tissue. However, you need it checked in case it is a problem. The sooner it is dealt with, the better your outcome. Early on, a lumpectomy may be all you need. That results in minimal scarring and tissue loss. However, if it goes on, then more of the breast might need to be removed, with removal of the tissue under the arm, and longer chemo and radiation therapy.

I know it's very scary. However, if you go to your doctor and get the appropriate testing done, it will improve your peace of mind. You'll either know it is nothing, or the appropriate care will be done and you will get your health back.
