Re: measuring carbsFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 3 Sep 2001 18:08:44 -0500 (CDT)
>Some carbs have different glycemic indexes from others. This basically means >that it is more difficult for us to digest some things than others, such as >whole wheat vs. white wheat. Actually, it means that foods with high glycemic indexes have a greater effect on our blood sugar levels. Refined carbohydrates typically have higher glycemic indexes because they've been stripped of the fiber and nutrients that slow the absorption of sugar. And if something causes your blood sugar to shoot up quickly, insulin levels follow directly behind. So low glycemic index foods not only have a lower impact on blood sugar levels, but correspondingly a low impact on insulin levels. Low G.I. foods also give sustained energy whereas high G.I. foods will rapidly raise blood sugar levels then send those levels crashing down , along with your energy .
