It's great that you care enough for your friend to want to work through this stuff with her.

I'm no medical expert, but my understanding (from personal experience and reading about PCOS) is that the risk of weight gain is much greater if PCOS is left untreated. Birth control pills are often used to manage symptoms, including weight. However, the underlying problem for most people with PCOS is that they are Insulin Resistant - which means our bodies fail to utilise the insulin we produce. This is checked using a blood test, and often treated using Glucophage (aka Metformin).

I'm only aware of one medication used to treat PCOS symptoms (Cyproterone Acetate or Androcur - used for excess hair) which may lead to weight gain. Most of us find that a low carb diet, exercise, and the right medications enable us to manage the symptoms pretty well.

Good luck to both of you!
