syndrome 'o'From: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 11 Jul 2001 21:34:10 EDT
here is a copy of an email i am forwarding to you. thought you may like it and find our pco group interesting..... char Well, perhaps that is a bit of an exaggeration -- For Now!! However -- Below is a commentary written Laurie Stallman -- 2001 PCOSupport Founders Award winner from San Antonio, TX. This was written for the San Antonio and Austin Chapters. Also, don't forget to attend the July 26th WNC PCOSupport meeting at 6:30pm at CARS for further information regarding Syndrome O and the forthcoming book by Dr. Ron Feinberg which features the Lesa Childers Story! WNC PCOSupport is going to be FAMOUS! See Below: From: anonymous@obgyn.net (Laurie) To: anonymous@obgyn.net, anonymous@obgyn.net Hi all Thought I'd share some personal commentary on interesting topics from this year's Conference, like a novel name for PCOS: You know the "other names for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome are Stein-Leventhal Syndrome, hyperandrogenic chronic anovulation, functional ovarian hyperandrogenism, and Polycystic Ovary Disease." http://www.inciid.org/faq/pcos1.html#1.4 Although used often, one common drawback to the term PCOS is that it misleads the hearer into thinking it's just a female ovary thing, when it's a syndrome that encompasses so much more. How often have you seen someone's eyes glaze over immediately at the mention "polycystic ovary" ? I think it even affects some doctors, who react as if it's primarily gynecological --- and they just don't go to that part of town. Some of the other names for PCOS, while more medically accurate and respectable, don't roll off the tongue easily and might be a little too long to ever catch on widely. --hyperandrogenic chronic anovulation (HCA) --and functional ovarian hyperandrogenism). However, I attended a talk by Dr. Ron Feinberg, who introduced an alternate term for PCOS: Syndrome O. I liked it as soon as I heard it. It's catchy, it's user-friendly. Think of the possibilities -- you might get farther along in a conversation by saying "I have Syndrome O," where before, saying "polycystic ovary" would turn the listener into a squeamish pillar of salt. :-)
>From what I hear, Dr. Ron Feinberg is coming out with a book about PCOS You can also think of Syndrome O as the female version of Syndrome X. I'm no expert on Syndrome X, so correct me, but I think PCOS fits neatly into the broad definition of Syndrome X. However, Syndrome X doesn't develop and explore the female aspects like it does the more traditionally male experiences of this syndrome. Hence, Syndrome O is a better fit. Here's the link to explore the Syndrome O : http://www.ivf-de.com/syndromeo.html Thought you might find this interesting too. Cheers, Laurie
