I'm not sure if this answers your question or not, but I tried an exercise called Pilates. It's similar to Yoga. All of the exercises are done using the mid-section of the body, abs and lower back.

To look at the movements, you might snuff, "What the heck is that going to do!?" But let me tell you, those muscles were sore the first few times! It felt great really. I love sore muscles! :) Atleast I know it's working.

Anyway, you might want to check this out. I'm not sure if muscle tone is what you need, but this certainly helps strengthen the stomach and lower back muscles, as well as helps you improve your breathing and ability to relax.

There are videos and books of course. Here's a web site to learn more: http://www.pilates.org/

Good luck!
