Re: I have always felt like a freak

Hi all.

I just wanted to post to tell y'all how wonderful it has been for me to find this site (which I found about 20 minutes ago)! I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 15, my doctors told me that nothing could be done about it other than the birth control pills which gave me horrible headaches (which was because my OBGYN prescribed a dosage way too high for a 15-year-old). They also told me that the only effect of the syndrome was the amonorrhea.

So, I just let it go. I gained weight even thought I ate less than most eveyone I knew. I had unusual hair growth, you all know the deal. It sucked.

Well, my Mom ran accross an article about PCOS in our local newspaper about 9 months ago. We found a group of doctors in my city, have had several appointments, and everything seems to be going OK. I'm on a low dosage birth control pill, just started glucophage two days ago, and am on a diet.

But, let me tell you, my doctors have all been rude, unsympathetic, and rather obnoxious. Even the doctors at the Reproductive Endochronology Group, who specialize in PCOS, as well as my PCP and my OBGYN. They have all lectured me, "Stay off the junk food. I know you like all that, but it's not going to help you loose weight." "Avoid all those fried foods you eat." "You need to exercise, I'm sure you hate it, but you do need to do it." "Stop being so lazy." This is fun, believe me. And guess what? I hate junk food and fried foods! I love sports, I play several and exercise at least 4 times a week.

But, hopefully things will turn around. I'm on a 1400 cal/day diet that low in carbs and fats... I'm actually feeling pretty healthy. I've started the glucophage, hopefully that'll do something. And my take on this whole thing is: who cares if the docs are rude and not understanding? They give me the medecine I need to be more healthy, I have a supportive family, and I'm going to do this. I will lose the weight, I will become healtier, despite all the odds that we all have going against us.

But, seroiusly, thank you all for being here, for posting and being so frank in your posts. It is good to know that there are others out there who have gone through similar trails.
