hi everyone!, I have never posted a message before, but here goes! My name is Samantha, I am 35 years old and have had PCOS for 8 years. It went undiagnosed for 4 years, in which time my periods stopped,my hair started to fall out at an alarming rate whilst hair grew in places I didn't think it could!!!,I developed acne on my face back and chest and I ballooned from 9 and a half stone to 15 and half stone!.Doctors treated the symptoms seperately, did't connect them, and told me that this is what happened as "we got older". After much reading, I came across an article about PCOS,which listed all the symptoms, and I thought Bingo!!.I took the article to my doctor, who read it, looked at me,and a light went on in his eyes!!!.An ovarian scan and a blood test later and diagnosis was confirmed.Eureka!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.I wasn't mad, bad, neurotic or old.... I was ill. In the following years I have read all that I can and tried many different treatments, from traditional to alternative and homeopathic. My big breakthrough was acupunture. It changed my body shape fome the cuboid, "manly" block it had become, back to a more femine, curvy shape.Whilst not completely back to normal it was a vast improvement.I felt cleaner and regained some of my lost confidence.Diet, too, helped.Low in fat, particulary animal fats, and high in protein.I also take a vitamin and mineral supplement with the full RDA of zinc and magnesium, which help to regulate hormone levels and keep the reproductive system healthy, amongst other benefits. Over the last few years PCOS has had a much wider coverage in the media. One of the articles covered an endocrinologist called Helen Mason. She believed that women with PCOS had high levels of insulin and was conducting trials on 1,000 women using a drug called metformin that makes you utilise the insulin to its best effect. Through my doctor(who is now extremely sympathetic), I have been accepted onto the trial.I have been on metformin for 4 months.I have had no adverse side effects and, wait for it.........I have had my first period for 8 years!!!!!(I do wish it was the weight that could have been the first to go, but beggars can't be choosers!!). For all those women and girls out there, that feel like they are going mad,and that their body is out of their control, take heart. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and you are not on your own.If anyone needs someone to talk to, please don't hesitate to mail me at the address above, I'd be only too happy to talk, Good luck and regards, Samantha.
