Robin, I'm no expert, but I'm about your age (just turned 35), and I was just recently diagnosed, so I'm in a similar boat.

1. Many women on these boards have difficulty with hair growth, but mine isn't too bad. I have a few stray dark hairs on my inner thighs and extra hairs on my legs near the bikini area. I also have hairs on the nipple area. I only have peach fuzz on my face, no dark hairs.

2. I don't know. You might have a more mild case and may not ever get really heavy if you control your insulin levels and watch your diet. I've never been heavier than 149, which is about 15-20 lb overweight. In the past, I've used Weight Watchers to help me keep control of my eating. Most PCOSers espouse a low or moderately low carb diet, and I'm researching that right now.

3. From what I read, it depends on the medication. I'm taking glucophage. In the 3 weeks I've been on it, I have lost 3 lb w/o any dietary changes. I'm now at 139.

4. I don't have any baldness. I shed hairs all the time, but I still have a lot of it. Ask your hairdesser for an honest assessment of your hairline.

5. Sure! Many women are diagnosed in their teens. I wasn't, however. You might have a relative with insulin resistance and not PCOS. My maternal grandmother had many of the symptoms, but was never diagnosed. She died of complications from diabetes.

Re acne: I don't have a bad case, but I do have a tendency to get some acne on my back/shoulders.

Remember, not everyone has all the symptoms. It is a syndrome, not a disease. You need to treat the underlying cause: the insulin resistance.

Don't panic. Read all the stuff on the Internet about PCOS and insulin resistance. Read the book "Syndrome X" and the PCOS book by Dr. Thatcher.

Don't be sick over it. Be happy to have a name to put to it and to catch it while you are still fairly young!

Oh--and read the postings on the main PCOS forum. That's where this question is better suited.

Keep your chin up! LF
