PCOS and bulimiaFrom: Angie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 27 May 2001 11:47:21 -0500 (CDT)
Hi everyone. I've been visiting this site for a about 3 months now and have found hints and tips really useful. I was diagnosed with PCO when I was 15 I'm now 27. Nothing was explained to me back then, I have constantly battled with my weight, I have facial hair - not too bad though as its blonde and i pluck it almost every day and my periods are very irregular - I haven't had one since January this year. I knew it was due to the PCO that i didn't have regular periods and i was advised that when i try for a baby i may find it difficult but that was all I was told. It was just by chance that I was flicking through a magazine and it had a huge article in it about PCOS, it was like OH MY GOD, it all suddenly made sense the symptoms that it described were the ones I had, never thinking they were all linked. I bought a book and started doing research to find out more behind it and thats when i came across this site. As i mentioned earlier I have always had a weight problem since I was about 13 when my periods started and then stopped and started etc etc. I did manage to lose weight back in 1999, the end of August I weighed 12st 5lbs and by New Year I was 10st, my periods became regular from that August until April 2000, then I went on the pill and started putting weight on again slowly, I came off the pill as I thought it may have been a side effect, but unfortunately the periods stopped again and the weight crept back on, I now weigh 11st 8lbs and I'm desperately trying to lose it again. I have given up on my doctor. I went to see a homeopath about 6 weeks ago and i'm having treatment for the PCOS but nothing positive to report as of yet, fingers crossed though :) I think I should also point out that I am bulimic, I'm not as bad as I was however, but interestly enough I was never bulimic until I lost all my weight and then for some reason i became totally obbessed with my appearance and then when the weight started creeping back on the bulimia started and got really out of control at one point, but i'm battling that and feel very positive, rarely doing anything along those lines now. I read in an article that 80% of bulimic women have PCOS, the food cravings etc contribute, so i guess i'm not the only one. Is there any success stories out there from bulimic or ex-bulimics who have overcome their problem and managed to lose weight, if so how did you do it and any hints and tips are so welcome. I've been for counselling and that helped but didn't overcome it, with it being our bodies and the food cravings being part of the PCOS it's not really a psycological thing that a counseller can help with. Any advice? Cheers Girls Angie
