Cholesterol emergency and tears of frustration

Hi everyone. I have just come from an appointment with my reproductive endo, and I feel like I have not gained anything as far as advice for what to do here. My cholesterol is 292! and I am 24 years old. I thought that I was doing batter, but the cholesterol has jumped up about 20 points in the past 3 months. I am about 60-75 pounds overweight, but I did find out that I am NOT insulin resistant. AND- I am emotionally drained due to frustration about what to eat. My endo did bring up the Zone diet, but I am just so confused about what to eat for protein. Cheese and meat raise cholesterol, yes? I know that I'm not supposed to eat sugars and carbs, but I need to fill in that empty part of the meal with something. I have basically been given 3-4 months to try and bring the cholesterol down, then I will have to go on meds for it. My mother is so concerned that she's suggesting Slim Fast as a quick start so that I don't have to think about food all day, as 2 meals will be taken care of for me. I am MISERABLE and confused and crying here by myself because I am so frustrated and don't know what to believe. Is it true that I can eat whole grain/whole wheat carbs, or is that a myth too. Can someone PLEASE try and help me get on the right track and point me in the right direction!
