Sharron- diets and Dr's etc...From: Joan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 18 May 2001 14:39:30 -0500 (CDT)
I hope you are going to see an endocrinologist or a Reproductive Endo. At any rate, at the very least he/she should be well versed on the use of insulin sensitisers like glucophage(Metformin) Avandia and Actos. Met. is the most common one and considered the safest-it can have bad GI side effects. Avandia may be more effective but can cause wieght gain and has not been on the market for a s long. These medications can be very helpful. There are alot of different opinions about diet-I won't try to anticipate what your Dr. will recommend. You might wish to look at the book "The idden Epidemic' by Samuel Thatcher for a good overview of the syndrome. If you'll forgive me for offering unsolicited advice: I was put on a number of diets as a youth and it was not a positive or productive experience. I hope you include your daughter in the decision making process. I encourage you to consider changing the way everyone in your household eats to help support her. It is no fun eating 'special' food -it adds to a sense of deprivation and can be self defeating. Your daughter sounds very lucky to have a mother who is as concerned and involved as you are. I wish you both the very best of luck. Joan
