Re: All those taking Metformin or GlucophageFrom: Nina (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 10 May 2001 13:49:50 -0500 (CDT)
Metformin (aka Glucophage) is a medication that is used primarely in diabetics, but is given to women with insulin resistance (which is a common symptom of PCOS). There are also other medications that can be given for insulin resistance, such as Avandia, and Actos. They do the same thing as the glucophage, but with less side affects. The main concern with most women is that the side affects of the glucophage are harsh, that include nausua, gastrointestional problems, and fatigue. I started on the met and I thought the side affects were too harsh so I tried actos, and my cycles started to become irregular again, so my doctor switched me to avandia, there were no side affect to the avandia, so i had no clue if it was working or not, so i wanted to go back to the met....I just started on the glucophage xr (newer form of met that is time released and you only have to take once in the morning..WONDERFUL) What im trying to say is that before I was put on any insulin sensitzing drug i had no periods,,,,when i started on met I started my period within 2 hours after my first dosage. I just found out a few days ago that my insulin went down from 86 to 18 on 4 months. And my fertilty monitor said I ovulated! So for me I think it works well as long as you can get over the side affects. Hope this helps in your decision. GOOD LUCK!!
