differences in carbs and sugars?

I'm new at this, and I'm getting my nutritional labels confused. I am supposed to stick to 150 grams of carbs or less per day. I'm also on glucophage. Is it okay to look for things that have carbs but no sugars? I was looking at some diabetic food products last night, most of which had no sugar but did have carbs. Is it the carbs or the sugars you really have to worry about? I always thought a carb was sugar, but now I'm confused. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks.
