Hi, this is my first time on this sit, I am 24 yrs old and live in Cali. I have been struggling for years with abnormal moons and weight. Until the last two years I have kept my weight close to normal by excercising almost every day and eating a very strict vegetarian diet. I have gained about 21 pounds over the past 2 years despite my supervised weight training 3x/wk and at least 45 min of cardio at 3x/wk. I restricted even more foods and still no dice. I have been telling my doctors for years about this and only was prescribed birth control which makes me unfunctionally sick, so I never stayed with it. A friend of mine was Diagnosed with PCOS and told me I should really check into it. Sure enough, when I went to my doctor with this specific concern and talked him into checking more thoroughly I also was diagnosed. I have spent weeks reading and trying different approaches to the weight gain. I am trying to focus more on diet and excercise than most other things for I am very weary about taking any drugs. I found a book titled The Insulin-Resistance Diet. Authors; Cheryl R Hart MD and Mary K Grossman. It is a good tool to understanding what happens with the food, insulin, and the fat. It also outlines a way of balancing foods for optimal efficiency. I have altered the diet to vegetarian, but kept the concept and have lost about 5 pounds in about 2 weeks. It has been the best progress I have seen so far. It is slightly meticulous since you must count carbs and protien, but at this point that is the least of my worries. So, after that long letter, this is basically what I have done and I haven't been hungry or tired either. I eat four meals a day each meal consisting of no more than 35 g. complex carb.(no white or refined grains, no sugar, no regular potatoes(sweet potatoes have a lower GI.) and balance that with at least 12 g of protein.(I don't eat meat, but from what I understand PCOS people may have lipid and chol. problems so, I would think legumes, soy, and fish may be good subs for meats sometimes.) and I don't really count fat, I just go with the lowest choices. I stay away from too much dairy also, green leafy veggies(spinach, collards, etc.) are high in calcium and can be eaten whenever. Apples and berries are also good snacks that have a low GI. But no more than a 1 cup serving. I try to buy all organic produce and grains and definately ONLY organic dairy(added hormones can be very harmful and I already have enough hormonal problems.)And meats. Getting a food counter helps tremendously, and when counting carbs, don't count the green leafies. I eat greens with every meal with lemons squeezed over instead of dressing. I also use ground flaxseed daily and only use extra v. olive oil for cooking. I make sure to excercise every day even if it is only walking my dogs and ten minutes with the little 5 lb. weights. So there is my neurotic diet, but it seems to be working for me. I would suggest spending some time at a good big bookstore and finding what you can on PCOS and insulin resistance and finding what works best for you. Another book I just found PCOS The Hidden Epidemic-Author Samual s.THatcher MD PHD. is good for some insight on the whole thing. It is the only one I have found that is totally dedicated to PCOS. Good Luck and Peace Within. We are all beautifull women!!!! C. At Tue, 01 May 2001, anonymous wrote: >
