My Story Of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

My name is Cathy Irving and I have PCOS. I was diagnosed with PCOS three years ago but we (doctor and I) backdated to the original date of 1993 when I was 16 years old. We knew there was something wrong when I jumped from 135lbs to 180lbs in less than a year. My family doctor sent me for tests and did a PAP test but did not find anything. My periods were always irregular so maybe I had it even earlier that 1993. He put me on birth control pills to see if that would have regulated my periods, but that didn't work...either I would bleed all month long or not at all, and being on the birth control pills left me unbelievable migraines. So I have been on and off birth control pills for 9 years, not being able to find one that would work. I got my doctor to refer me to a GYOB and she was the one that actually diagnosed me with PCOS three years ago. She told me that I was missing a hormone that causes me to ovulate and have periods and the only was that I could have a period was to take the birth control pill because it gave me the hormone that I needed. Well I tried it and could not take it because of the migraines. So for about 18 months now I have not had a period. She did tell me that when I got pregnant with my daughter (who is four now) that she was my miracle baby and I would probably not be able to have another one...which broke my heart because I wanted a large family. So here I stand with no hope or future, and currently on no medication. I have read the pamphlets that she gave me and found an article in Woman's Day magazine about Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and how they are trying out a new drug. But so far, nothing for me. There isn't much around where I live in Stewiacke Nova Scotia and I can not find a support group or anyone to talk to about it. I do not know of anyone that has it besides me, that I know. It is very frustrating. My latest resort was to go online and search. I have that someone will be able to find a cure for this god awful disease. They have hormone supplements for people with sex changes to get them the hormones they need...why can't they find a hormone supplement for the REAL woman that desperately NEEDS the hormone?

thank you for taking the time to read my story.

Sincerely yours

--
