I believe that you need .5 grams of carb per pound of body weight. Atkins keeps you below 20 for the first two weeks, then you tweak the program by adding carbs until you stop losing weight. This way you can see how many carbs your body can tolerate without gaining. A diabetic diet usually allows 15-30 carbs per meal, with two snacks of 15 carbs in between meals. That is what I followed when I had gestational diabetes. Diana Schwarzbein (The Schwarzbein Principal) pretty much follows that pattern as well, based on activity level. If you exercise you will need more, if you are a couch potato, you'll need less. The bloodstream has enough glucose to feed the brain for about 3 minutes, then it calls up the liver to release glucose. The liver maintains enough to last for 12 hours. If you are taking Glucophage isn't there a dietary guideline while taking the meds? Someone posted before that they are keeping below 150 carbs per day while taking it.
