Re: gloucophage used as a diet drug on non-pcos personFrom: Leslie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 20 Mar 2001 16:09:58 -0800
Katrina, I haven't seen anyone else tackle your question, so I'll try a little. Glucophage is not a drug designed specifically for pcos. It is for those who tend to be insulin resistant. Most people who are overweight or have difficulty losing weight tend to be resistant. If you are truly concerned, and have had difficulties losing weight, I might suggest that you request an insulin test be done. Many people here have had great difficulty losing weight, and have found that it did help them. It certainly helped me lose the weight, but I had unfortunate side effects with it, and could not stay on the drug. The weight loss was not healthy for me. Insulin resistance is where the cells have a difficult time connecting with the insulin. I don't know about the panc thing. Glucophage is supposed to help the cells have greater receptivity, not effect the panc so much. At least that is what I understand about its function. Leslie
