Re: gloucophage used as a diet drug on non-pcos personFrom: Dona (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 16 Mar 2001 20:28:11 -0600 (CST)
Hi, Are you IR(insulin resistant)? that could be one reason to put you on gluc. He should have done an insulin tolorance test first (You probably had this done in your last trimester of pregnancy). Gluc will only help you loose weight if you are IR. IR is one of the major reason why most woman are obese or have problems loosing weight. You dont have to have PCOS to have IR also you dont have to have cysts present on your overies to have PCOS because it is a syndrome. If it turns out that you are IR and may have PCOS as well...becarful because gluc can cause you to ovulate and you can become pregnant before you are ready to.Have you tried low carbing at all?...this is a natural way to correct IR without drugs but it takes time and a lot of effort and support. As far as I know Gluc will not cause infertility if you take it and you are not clinically IR. I know of several woman who have cysts and are not IR who are taking it to help with ovulation.also be sure that he monitors your kidney function monthly because gluc can cause kidney problems in some poeple although this is rare. And if your in doubt about your doctor at all go to a reproductive endo for the proper testing to see if you do have PCOS and or IR. >good luck, Dona >I visited my ob-gyn today and voiced my concern about not losing weight >after the birth of my daughter two years ago.
