Re: Daughter recently diagnosed with PCOS & on GlucophageFrom: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 22 Feb 2001 21:10:53 -0600 (CST)
Jan. I have PCOS and diabetes (type II). After ahving a really hard time managing both... well diabets more, I went to my Diabetes Nutritioinst at the end of my wits. Now I have heard several different things from several differernt doctors, but this diabetic nutritionsit, Beverly, put it all in perspective for me. If the blood sugars are high do not eat any carbs at all. Once the sugars are back in normal range, it is going to require some diligence to test how different foods AND amounts of food will affect your blood sugar. Everyone is DIFFERENT. Honestly there is no ONE plan for all. Becasue everyone's body processes food in a different way! Beverly recommended the Zone or Atkins, but she said to take Atkins with a grain of salt, i.e. some of his methods are a bit extreme therefore change them to accomodate you. My husband and I are doing the ZONE diet. I am not buying the first book "THE ZONE" becasue it's too dense for me to read, i want action! So I bought the books "A WEEK IN THE ZONE" and "MASTERING THE ZONE". CARBS are the true enemy, don't let anyone tell you different! Managing your daughter's intake of them will be key! Also, don't just take what any doctor says as the end-all-be-all...So many doctors have their own opinions. If your daughter needs oral meds, try metphormin...it's a great glucophage, especially for women with PCOS and diabetes. Since my blood sugars are high, I am not eating any carbs for the next few days to try and balance things out! I have been looking at diabetes as this unmangeable force.. a really big DOWNER, but with Beverly's straight-forward words (she's a TYPE-I diabetic) it's looking better. My doctors strongly feel that when I lose weight my body will right itself, so I honestly have to say that i am not doing anything special for the PCOS. i hope this helps. If your daughters sugars are over 170 much less 200, then she is NOT insulin-resistant she is diabetic. They kept telling me I was IR for months when in reality I was diabetic. It is manageable, be strong!
