I know how you feel about the weight. I also have high cholesterol. My doctor put me on the medication baycol to help control that. I could not lose a pound until I started reducing my carbohydrates. In a month and a half I have been able to lose 15 lbs.( I still can't believe how this has worked. Anyway, get a book that outlines a low carb. diet so you know what foods to restrict. You would be surprised about what foods contain high amounts of carbs. I am not obsessive about my fats, but I do watch those that are obviously high in fat (fried foods, fatty meats, etc.)I have just tried to cut back on portions and I only drink water (coffee in the AM). I did not want to go on some way out diet that I could not stay on for the rest of my life. This seems to be working. It is not easy and I do miss those breads and potatoes, but I know I have to do this. You don't have to cut out carbs. completely just limit what uou have per meal. (I try to stay around 50 g. per meal).I thought I was going to be fat and miserable the rest of my life. Now I know I have a chance at changing that. My endocrinologist seem to think that losing the weight will help control the other symptoms. We'll see. Good luck.
