PCOS/Diverticular diet concernsFrom: foofoo (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 25 Nov 2000 03:28:10 -0600 (CST)
Hello! I have PCOS and also Diverticular disease, which both have very particular diets. (Diverticular definitely so). Is there anyone else out there with diverticulii? I suspect there may be. For those who are not familiar with diverticular disease, this is where small pouches form at points of weakness in one's intestinal tract. From my experience it is very easy to mistake as cramping, or stomach flu, or indigestion. The pockets can break through, so this condition is potentially serious. This is mostly a disease of old age, but not always. (I'm 27). Diverticular disease is believed to be caused by too little fibre in the diet, causing pressure on the bowel walls. It is aggravated by gas and things like small seeds that get caught in the little pockets. Because I have PCOS, I am told that I have to cut back on carbs and sugars, and because I have diverticular disease, I have to consume much more fibre, but avoid hard kernels and seeds that are in many high-fibre products such as multigrain bread. Many things in a low carb diet are bad too, because they induce gas. Gas is dangerous too someone with an injured bowel.
