whole grains/fruits on a 'low carb' plan works for some

Some people can lose weight eating 200 grams of carbs a day, some need to cut that below 50 grams. For the first two weeks of Atkins I think 20 is recommended. For some it not just the carb count but the "Glycimic Index" that matters. (I know if this gets too complicated you won't finish reading, sorry.) Get a book about G index and it can help you pick a larger variety of foods. Barley (which I love) has the lowest G index of any grain. Despite its low fat claim to fame rice has a high glycimic index. Bananas are high but cherries are low. Winter squash is high but sweet potatos are (relativly) low.

You won't lose as much as adhearing to 20 g's of carbs a day but with the inclusion of a wider variety of foods you will develop long term personalized eating practices that are effective for you.

good luck!
