Kelly-more about my approachFrom: Joan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Oct 2000 15:07:39 -0500 (CDT)
Since you asked...I have learned that, for me, extreme diets don't work-I may loose weight, but eventually my sense of deprivation makes the whole thing backfire. That is why I am taking more of a 'change in lifestyle' sort of approach. Also, I am exercising regularly. With my 'diet', I am probably more interested in addressing the health problems associated with Insulin resistance than in loosing wieght. So I am pleased that my insulin is almost normal now(I am also on 4mg. Avandia). I am also loosing a modest amount of wieght-which for me I think is healthy(1/2lb to 1lb a week-can't translate that to stones). I think that several of the low carb diets out there sound pretty reasonable. I don't enjoy the structure of a diet per se. so i just use some general guidelines. I avoid white flour, white rice, sugar etc... and generally try to be aware of glycemic index. I do eat whole grain items, which have a number of benefits anyway and lower glycemic indexes. I will say, eating out can be a challenge. This works for me because we do a fair amount of cooking in my house and my spouse has been accomodating about these changes. There are a lot of options out there. I hope you find one that feels comfortable for you and that you set reasonable goals for yourself. Good Luck to you.
