Blood Tests / Metformin / High Protein DietFrom: Jeanie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 3 Aug 2000 15:49:35 -0500 (CDT)
Hello all - I am new here but had a couple questions. I am 35, overweight (290) and diagnosed with PCOS (polycyctic ovarian syndrom). I had discovered that women with PCOS have good results in losing weight by being on a low carb diet. So I started the atkins diet. I have also read that women with PCOS can get help with their insulin resistance with a medication called Glucophage (Metformin). So I asked my doctor about it and he said he would have to check my liver via a blood test. When the results came in, he said my results were "out of range" and he couldn't give the metformin to me. I asked if it was because I was on the high protein diet and he said it could be. So he asked me to take the test again. I decided to stop the diet a week before my second test. Then when I went to have the test again, it came back "within range" per the doctor so I was prescribed metformin. My question is this: If a high protein diet helps women with PCOS, Why does a high protein diet make my liver test out of range, therefore "dangerous" while I am using Metformin? It seems like all the posts I have read about PCOS, suggest being on this type of diet. Im confused. I would still like to lose weight on this type of diet because it worked for me but I don't want to jepordize my health. Any suggestions or clarification? Thanks in advance. You may email me direct if you wish. Jeani123@aol.com
