How do you know what to eat for PCOS?From: Carrie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 11 Jul 2000 12:45:28 -0500 (CDT)
Hello, my name is Carrie and I was diagnosed with PCOS in May of 1998 at 23 while trying to get pregnant. I had always been slim through high school. I never watched what I ate but was very active and on the bcp. As soon as I stopped the bcp, dropped my activity level, and kept up eating whatever I wanted I started to balloon. It has been 8 years and I have gained 100 pounds. I was very successful with one dose of Clomid for my infertility and now am the proud mother of 14 month old twins, Caleb and Katie. However, I am having a much harder time overcoming the insulin resistance I tested positive for. I have been taking Glucophage since March. I started with 500 and worked to 1500mg/day after three weeks. No period. I am up to 2000mg/day for a month now and no period. In fact, my testosterone is going up, but the doc thinks it is because I stopped taking the bcp (again). I am most confused as to what I should be eating. Some say the Glucophage levels the playing field and you can eat like any other person. Most people say to eat low carb. I have heard only 20g of carbs a day all the way up to 50g a day. Who is right? Is it ok to eat the 20-50g all day long or just in one hour like the CAD? Also, I have always been a milk, cheese, dairy, meat person - great! However, I love bread, pasta. Not big on fruits and veggies. When I look at meal plans it will mention something like salad with olive oil - YUCK! I just want something that fits my hectic lifestyle and don't know where to turn. I don't know if there are nutritionists that will deal with PCOS and help me come up with a meal plan or if they would nay say the low carb. I can excercise and try to find the right medication, but I fear all would be for naught without the right eating plan. Just confused with so much information!!! Thanks for any help!
